Tiny Coffins of Arthur’s Seat

In 1836, five young boys, hunting for rabbits on Arthur’s Seat in Edinburgh, found 17 minature coffins hidden inside a cave.

Each coffin, only 4 inches in length, contained a little wooden figure, expertly carved with handmade clothing and little painted boots.

Although there have been many suggestions as to their purpose and origin (including my favorite theory that links them to the victims of Burke & Hare) the fact remains that whoever was responsible for making and placing these morbid little treasures took the secrets to their own grave.

They were held by a private collector until 1901, when they were presented to The Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh where the eight remaining coffins are on display to the public today.
